35th anniversary of the ARPANET
September 1st was the 35th anniversary of the
ARPANET
(the predecessor of the Internet) according to
The Register
.
I had no idea until I
looked it up
that JCR Licklider was heavily involved in the project; I mainly think of him as the author of the amazing 1960 paper
Man-Computer Symbiosis
in which he said
The hope is that, in not too many years, human brains and computing
machines will be coupled together very tightly, and that the resulting
partership will think as no human brain has ever thought and process
data in a way not approached by the information-handling machines we
know today.
Pretty cool. So he was apparently a networking guru as well as a cyborg specialist :)
